The European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) has recently signed an agreement with GÉANT, the pan-European research and education network, to interconnect the EuroHPC supercomputers through a new, ultra-high-performance infrastructure.

GÉANT was selected following an open call for tenders launched in December 2024. The contract, covering a period of 48 months, includes the design, implementation and operation of the hyperconnectivity infrastructure.

Thanks to this partnership, Belgian researchers, public authorities and companies will in the future enjoy faster and more secure access to Europe’s HPC, AI and quantum facilities.

Hyperconnectivity powering European research

Over the coming years, GÉANT will build a new federated network infrastructure connecting EuroHPC supercomputers, AI factories and quantum facilities across Europe.

Transmission speeds are expected to reach the terabit-per-second range, enabling the exchange of massive data volumes — essential for scientific research, AI applications and complex simulations.

Through the trusted and secure GÉANT network, in which Belnet plays an integral role, researchers will be able to share data more efficiently, collaborate across borders and tap into Europe’s most powerful computing resources.

What does this mean for the Belnet community?

As Belgium’s National Research and Education Network (NREN) and a member of GÉANT, Belnet plays a key role in this European hyperconnectivity initiative.

For institutions connected to Belnet, this means:

  • Seamless and high-speed access to EuroHPC supercomputers, AI factories and quantum infrastructures
  • Strong security standards for sensitive research and government data
  • Greater opportunities for international scientific and technological collaboration
